01 — Current responsibility
Shri Hardeep Singh Puri has held the petroleum and natural gas portfolio as a Cabinet Minister since 7 July 2021. After the 2024 general election he was sworn in again on 9 June 2024 and allocated the same ministry.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is responsible for the exploration and production of oil and gas, refining, distribution and marketing, imports and exports, and conservation of petroleum products. It also oversees public-sector companies including ONGC, Indian Oil, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL and Oil India, and regulators and institutions such as the PNGRB, DGH and PPAC.

04 — Energy transition
Under the National Policy on Biofuels (2018, amended 2022), the E20 target was brought forward from 2030 to Ethanol Supply Year 2025-26. PPAC data show average blending of 20.0% for November 2025 to August 2026.
Related programmes include compressed biogas under SATAT, a phased CBG blending obligation from FY 2025-26, and indicative sustainable aviation fuel targets for international flights.
05 — International energy engagement
Recorded engagements include the renewed India–Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue (January 2026), the OPEC International Seminar in Vienna (July 2025), a joint statement with Brazil (September 2024) and India Energy Week, which the ministry hosts every year.

The release reported blending of 19.24% in ESY 2024-25 and outlined ethanol procurement prices by feedstock. It described a phased approach to blends beyond E20.

The ministry reported that the E20 target was reached in 2025-26, five years ahead of the original 2030 timeline, and gave cumulative estimates of foreign exchange saved and crude substituted since ESY 2014-15.
