Vande Bharat Mission

Policy objective

Bring stranded Indian nationals home while scheduled international flights were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Implementation

Flights by Air India and other carriers, together with naval ships and bilateral “air bubble” arrangements, coordinated by the Ministries of Civil Aviation and External Affairs.

Data

More than 11 lakh returns by 31 August 2020 (PIB), and more than 67.5 lakh people facilitated by March 2021 (PIB). Official figures count travel in both directions and by several modes, so definitions differ between releases.

Regional connectivity: under RCS-UDAN, Kurnool airport was inaugurated on 25 March 2021, with the minister joining virtually. Flights began on 28 March 2021 (PIB). He handed over the Civil Aviation portfolio on 9 July 2021 (PIB).

  • Upstream legislation: The Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Act, 2025 introduced a “petroleum lease”, decriminalised offences and added penalties with adjudication (PIB).
  • Exploration acreage: About 1 million sq km of former “no-go” offshore area was opened in 2022 (PIB, Rajya Sabha reply, 29 Jul 2025).
  • Gas tariffs: PNGRB cut pipeline tariff zones from three to two from 1 January 2026 (PNGRB).
